Although entirely natural, essential oils are by no means ‘gentle’. Far from it.
Said to be up to 75 times more powerful than dried herbs, a little oil goes a very long way. We include essential oils at a one percent concentration, a level suitable for inclusion in rinse-off personal care products yet sufficiently high to elevate your haircare experience. As you’re about to find out, however, at this concentration, these remarkable blends offer more than simply a pleasant scent. Much more…
The field of essential oils is vast and, if millennia of use across a multitude of civilisations, cultures and medical systems are to be believed, their versatility and benefits abound. Essentials oils are concentrated extracts found in many, though not all, plants. Used the world over in medicine, perfumery and skincare, to name a few applications, the chemicals within these extracts are understood to powerfully interact with our minds and bodies through the olfactory system, provoking some decidedly advantageous physical and emotional benefits.
The parts of the plant we specifically source essential oil from varies with each (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and peels all have something to offer), while the methods used to extract the oil also differ between steam distillation and cold-pressing (depending on which is most suitable for the plant). Importantly though, both these processes are chemical-free, thus the compounds extracted capture as much of the natural quality, purity, characteristics and benefits of the host plant as possible.
Though scientific research may remain inconclusive, there is surely no doubt as to the effects that fragrance can initiate on our mind and mood. Before we’re even consciously aware of a scent in the air, olfactory receptors (located in the upper air passages of our nose) have already transmitted signals to the limbic system (an area within our brain). This system influences our emotions, behaviours and long-term memory, as well as also playing a role in controlling our breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. No surprise then why inhaling certain aromas helps us relax, feel energised, evoke memories, clear busy minds and even cool or warm our bodies.
Some essential oils also embody antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiviral qualities, therefore making them potentially effective remedies when diluted and applied to the skin – be that refreshing, soothing or invigorating. As you massage your shampoo and conditioner into the scalp, therefore, the tiny capillaries below the skin’s surface expand and blood flow to the area increases, enabling the essential oils (as well as the many other beneficial actives in our formulas) to be rapidly absorbed.
There is a boundless selection of essential oils to choose from, each offering distinct, formidable and even intriguing qualities. We scrutinised the field, researched those essential oils most renowned for the harmonising qualities required by our Vata, Pitta and Kapha hair Doshas, and carefully balanced them within three bespoke blends – all crafted here in the UK. We hope you’ll enjoy experiencing our ingenious oils.
